‘You didn’t have to walk me back to the hotel,’ she said, shivering slightly at Joe’s proximity and pulling her cardigan closed over her chest.

‘I wasn’t going to let you walk the streets of Amsterdam alone,’ he said, stepping closer so their arms almost touched. ‘And I want to talk to you as much as I want to ensure that you’re safe, for my own peace of mind. Would you like my jacket?’

She shook her head. Darcy’s body trembles were down to full-blown anticipation. Especially when he looked at her the way he’d been doing all day, as if she were a dessert he wanted to devour.

Heaven help her...

‘I’ve wanted to get you alone,’ he said, placing his hand in the small of her back as the crowd of passers-by clogged the pavement. Not that she minded. Ever since she’d watched him drive away from her street she’d craved a return to this closeness. No matter how many times she’d reasoned that it was better if they never happened, she couldn’t be convinced.

He’d sat next to her in the lecture theatre rather than sitting with consultant colleagues. He’d asked for her opinions on the topics presented and introduced her to the internationally renowned surgeons that he knew.

He’d even stood up for her to the self-important Professor Jensen. She couldn’t recall the last time anyone had done that. Self-reliant Darcy could take care of herself, but it was nice to know that he cared.

‘You’re welcome.’ She smiled and her cheeks ached; she’d smiled so much today. ‘Although, at the time I regretted it immediately.’

Her breath stuttered in her chest at admitting how much she still wanted him. But she refused to enter this fling based on just common or garden lust. She cared about him as a person too much.

And you’ve never felt lust this powerful before.

Because things had changed. Finally, she felt like his professional equal, as if Joe understood her, respected her, valued her. Her whole life she’d craved the acceptance that she was okay, that she wasn’t defective because of her father’s repeated and confusing abandonment. To feel
